Managing Your Fatigue: The Emotional Causes of Fatigue Part 3

Effects of stress on the body.

When you live with any type of arthritis, day in and day out, it can be emotionally draining.  This is a look at the different types of emotional stress that can lead to fatigue:

  • Depression:  The stress of any illness will make you sad and blue, you don’t feel like doing anything or going anywhere, or even being around friends and family.  These feeling can wear you out and cause your fatigue.  Then when you’re tired all the time it can contribute to your depression.  It’s a cycle that, at times, can be difficult to get away from.
  • Overextending yourself:  There are some with arthritis who still have a difficult time pacing themselves years after their diagnosis.  The fatigue stays with you even though it may be in varying degrees.  Sometimes it’s hard to know when you’ve reached your limits especially if you don’t heed the warning signs of pain and fatigue your body sends you.  You will inevitably push yourself harder when you are feeling good.  Is this you?  This could be one of the causes of your fatigue.  It’s natural to want to keep up with your regular activities, but with your arthritis this will not always be possible.
  • Trying to hide your illness from others:  I’m not sure why anyone would want to hide their illness from others.  These people will push themselves to do the same things, at the same pace, causing more fatigue later.  It’s seems to me to be self-defeating.
